400th Anniversary English Harpsichord

Return to main page

In 2007, I made a conjectural 1607 English harpsichord which was played on the 400th anniversary of

the day Jamestown settlers visited the Native American village where Claremont, Virginia now stands (which is where I live).

Michael Monaco traveled from Colonial Williamsburg on the day, May 7th, and played it in the

Claremont Town Hall for the quadricentennial concert event.

It had been my intention to keep it as a rental instrument, but this did not work out. Being constructed mainly of oak and yellow pine,

it is rather heavy and is larger than ideal for rental purposes (7' 2”).

I have therefore decided to make a smaller and lighter instrument to replace it.

The case is plain dark oak. A painted interior to the lid would be a good idea, though has not been done to date.

The compass, typical of England in the early 1600s is four octave2, C – c'''. The keyboard has boxwood naturals and

black oak sharps. It as two unisons at eight-foot pitch and can be tuned either to 415 or 440 pitch.

The asking price is $9,900 though sensible offers will be considered.
